JohnT42 A beautiful, inspired album, I have ordered a copy of Nan Shepherd's The Living Mountain. I gain ‘spiritual’ calmness delivered by landscape and this album reflects beauty from within, garnered from experience of being there and strong sense of place. First witnessed Salt House live in Settle, North Yorks and my friend suggested buying ‘From The Skein’, which I did. A brilliant progression, so calming in our strange times. Fantastic musicians add depth to some magical writing and arrangements. Favorite track: The Senses.

about

‘The Living Mountain’ is the second solo album from songwriter Jenny Sturgeon (singer and multi-instrumentalist in Salt House and Northern Flyway), released by Hudson Records, recorded and produced by Andy Bell at Clashnettie Arts Centre in the Cairngorms National Park. The Living Mountain was inspired by Nan Shepherd’s book ‘The Living Mountain’ and Jenny’s experience growing up near, and walking in, the Cairngorms. In the album Jenny explores her own connection to this highland area as well as delving into Nan’s philosophy of being in the mountains and peoples’ connection to the wild. The twelve songs take inspiration from the chapter titles of Nan’s book; the lyrics tell of exploration, love, loss and wonder at the natural world from small scale mosses and moths to the wider landscape and ecosystem. The album features Mairi Campbell on viola and vocals, Su-a Lee on cello, Grant Anderson on bass and vocals, and sound recordings from Jez Riley-French and Magnus Robb. In addition, Jenny has also set up ‘The Living Mountain’ grove with Scottish rewilding conservation charity Trees for Life.
